Ford and MIT Team Up To Improve Safety by Reducing Driver Stress

DEARBORN, Mich., Dec. 30, 2009 -- As Americans fight through the most stressful time of the year, Ford Motor Company and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) are embarking on a plan to study driver workload and identify new opportunities to use in-vehicle technologies to improve driver safety by lowering stress.

While holiday shoppers recover from fighting long lines, crowded parking lots and icy roads, Ford and MIT researchers are focusing on how the car can potentially enhance overall human wellness, become an oasis from stressful situations, and increase driver attention and safety.

Partnering with MIT's renowned AgeLab, the project will identify specific stress-inducing driving situations, monitor a driver's reaction to the situations using biometrics, and evaluate methods to incorporate new stress-reducing features into the next generation of Ford products. A six-month effort beginning this January will focus on human interaction with a specially equipped 2010 Lincoln MKS, a vehicle already recognized for its advanced safety features.

"We strongly believe that driving can be made safer by reducing the stress load placed on a driver," said Jeff Rupp, Ford manager, Active Safety Research. "Through the use of our existing technologies such as Adaptive Cruise Control with Collision Warning or SYNC, our voice-activated communications system, we are proactively guiding drivers away from difficult situations."
"The goal of this program is to take this one step further by creating the most comfortable driving environment possible so that our driver is always relaxed, calm and able to perform at peak performance," added Rupp.

Ford and MIT - partners in driver wellness

This current undertaking is the next step in an ongoing effort to study and, eventually, significantly improve driver wellness. Since 2004, Ford and MIT's AgeLab - in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Transportation's New England University Transportation Center - have been working to develop vehicle systems that detect the state of a driver at key points in time. This project envisions using this information to adjust systems in the car in ways that reduce driver stress. One of the goals of this work is to help the driver recapture the wellness experience that driving once promised.

"Today's driver is feeling a greater level of anxiety than in the past, both from situations inside and outside the vehicle," said Joseph Coughlin, founder and director of MIT's AgeLab and the leader of this initiative since its outset. "This arises in part from the chronic stress in individuals' daily lives combined with longer commute times, increased driving demands due to traffic congestion and deteriorating infrastructure.

"By identifying specific situations and the physiological effect they have on the driver, we are seeking solutions that can bring the driver from a heightened stress level back to an optimal operational state and thereby make their commute safer and more comfortable, renewing the positive experience of driving and riding in an automobile."

By monitoring biometrics such as heart rate, skin conductivity and eye movement, researchers at MIT have been working to develop a specific set of parameters for an embedded detection system that could be engineered into future Ford vehicles.

"Increasing human-vehicle connectivity through biometrics may provide the next major breakthrough in vehicle safety and lead the development of aware vehicle systems," said Bryan Reimer, an MIT AgeLab research scientist working on the project.

A white paper describing the conceptual framework for a vehicle-based safety/wellness platform and results of studies on detection systems was released today by the MIT AgeLab (http://web.mit.edu/agelab/MIT_AgeLab_wellness_platform.pdf).

The MIT AgeLab develops new ideas and technologies to improve the quality of life of older people. Coughlin said that "we have a unique opportunity to use new technology to help people live not just longer, but better across the lifespan." AgeLab's multidisciplinary team of engineers, psychologists, designers, clinicians and social scientists have been conducting research on wellness and wellbeing to better understand behavior in key areas including health, financial planning and driver safety.

Commitment to innovation in safety and security

Two crucial parts of the overall driver wellness package are safety and security, and Ford maintains a leadership position in both areas.

As the flagship vehicle in the Lincoln lineup, MKS will provide MIT AgeLab researchers a rolling test vehicle with leading-edge driver-assistance technology. With innovations such as BLIS(®) (Blind Spot Information System) with Cross Traffic Alert, Adaptive Cruise Control and Collision Warning with Brake Support, MyKey((TM)), Voice-Activated Navigation and SYNC(®), Ford Motor Company is equipping its vehicles with innovations that not only create a safer and more secure driving experience, but that reduce driver stress and enhance passenger comfort.

Diet, exercise, rest...and a stress-free car

Today's consumers are seeking every edge they can in the pursuit of a healthier and happier life, including diet, exercise and rest. Ford is committed to introducing in-vehicle technology that minimizes anxiety and actively mitigates stress levels so that the vehicle can serve a beneficial role in a human's life like a healthy diet or regular exercise, and ultimately be part of the total wellness solution.

"We believe we have the opportunity to recast the driving experience not as a source of stress, but as a refuge from the daily grind and an opportunity to refresh the driver," Rupp said.
Ford and MIT expect to conclude this phase of the study in July 2010. Findings of the study will be made public shortly after its conclusion.

URG Says Feds Missed Opportunity To Keep Cash for Clunkers Program Green

CENTENNIAL, Colo., Dec. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- The United Recyclers Group (URG) says that the federal government is not doing enough to help promote the green aspects of the auto salvage industry and encourage the use of environmentally-friendly green auto parts. "Cash For Clunkers (C4C) created some much needed green awareness for consumers and momentum within the auto industry," says Michelle Alexander, executive director of the United Recyclers Group. "But a big opportunity was missed by the federal government when they all but abandoned C4C once the front end of the program involving the new car manufacturers and dealers was completed. The back half of the program is far greener than the front half, and yet the ball has been dropped when it comes to promoting the truly green aspects of C4C. We call on the federal government to change course and help us promote the use of affordable and green auto parts to American consumers."

C4C has also resulted in a number of unanticipated problems for the nation's auto salvage industry. With 690,000 cars sold during the brief run of the C4C (otherwise known as CARS) program, and an equal number traded in and scrapped, a 'tsunami of steel' has hit the industry. A number of unexpected delays by the federal government and a shortened run time for the CARS program have meant less processing time for recyclers. There are still serious issues, despite the recent announcement of a 90 day extension to the 180 day deadline (making 270 days total) for processing all of the scrapped C4C vehicles.

Alexander says, "URG has requested and continues to fully support a minimum six month extension of the CARS program processing deadline mandated by the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA). We need at least a full year to do this job right. The recent 90 day extension is a step in the right direction, but it doesn't go far enough. Many of our members now have a one to two year inventory of automobiles waiting to be processed. There has been no help at all from the federal government promoting the use of green reusable auto parts. So with no increase in demand, we are simply looking at an increase in our costs, and it isn't reasonable or fair to auto recyclers. Auto recyclers are hardworking small businessmen and women, very much tied to their communities, and can be found in every congressional district in America. Just because they don't have the lobbying clout of the 'Big Three' in Washington doesn't mean their needs and concerns don't matter when new programs like C4C are created."

"Cash For Clunkers started as a billion dollar program that was going to run until November 1, 2009," says Greg Wilcox, co-owner and president of Midway Auto Parts (Kansas City, MO), and a URG Manager. "Six months to process the clunkers traded in made sense. But then congress tripled the size of the program, it all came and went in a matter of weeks, instead of months, and then NHTSA finally got around to a small adjustment, less than what anyone in this industry has asked for, of the processing deadline even as they tripled the size of the program. This oversight creates huge problems for the auto recycling industry, because there is no money to support our extra costs - such as more staff, more space, and more inventory carrying costs - incurred because we now have to meet an unrealistic deadline."

John Fischl, President of Riteway Auto Parts (Phoenix, AZ) and a URG manager says, "Cash for Clunkers was all about being green and stimulating the economy. All of those good intentions backfire when auto recycling, one of the nation's greenest industries, and this country's 13th largest, is impacted in a way that hurts our profitability and causes us to be less green as we scramble to meet an artificial deadline."

Fischl says, "These vehicles need more time in the system to produce the maximum green benefit for this country and the American consumer. I wonder how many decision makers who supported C4C understand that the really green thing we do is process vehicles and reclaim the green parts for reuse by consumers. This is what separates us from car crushers, who simply shred cars to recycle the metals. Millions of Americans benefit from the green auto parts we put into the marketplace every year. Doesn't that matter to anyone in Washington?"

United Recyclers Group, LLC is a partnership of over 330 industry leading auto recyclers that work together to improve and modernize the automotive recycling industry. Changes they have made include developing their own inventory management system, Pinnacle and Pinnacle Pro; creating a buying cooperative; and offering group marketing options. PickupTrucks.com and AutoPacific Announce the Most Significant Trucks of the Decade

CHICAGO, Dec. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- PickupTucks.com and AutoPacific have taken a look at all the new trucks sold in the last 10 years and made their picks for the most significant trucks of the decade. The trucks that made the list introduced cutting edge technologies and pushed the segment into new territory.

"Despite the economic challenges of the past two years, it's hard not to look back at the last ten years without calling it the decade of the pickup truck," said PickupTrucks.com editor Mike Levine. "Sales of full-size pickups hit 2.56 million units in 2004 and Ford's F-Series trucks remain the nation's best-selling vehicles, 33 years in a row."

Though there are many trucks that had a significant impact in the last decade, it's clear that the 2009 Ford F-150 earned the title of "Most Significant".

"On balance, we thought the 2009 Ford F-150 was the most significant pickup of the last decade," said Jim Hossack, vice president of consulting for AutoPacific. "It sells in high volume, owners like it and its body, chassis and powertrain are all first rate. Features abound, and there are more models, series and options than can be counted. It's a good looking truck and suitable for the widest possible range of tasks and uses."

Below is the complete ranking of most significant trucks of the decade:

2000 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab

Why It's Significant: First pickup truck to offer four full-sized doors and a configuration that prioritized passenger space over cargo capacity.

Crew cab pickups were popular in overseas markets long before they finally arrived in the U.S. Nissan was the first to offer its buyers another choice beyond a regular or extended cab. Buyers loved the idea because entire families could now travel comfortably in pickup trucks on long trips or around town. The idea quickly gained traction with every manufacturer and soon crew cabs made up almost 50 percent of the mix of all trucks sold.

2001 Chevrolet Silverado / GMC Sierra Heavy Duty with 6.6-Liter Duramax Diesel

Why It's Significant: Made GM a serious player in heavy duty pickups and raised the bar for diesel engines.

In 2000, GM held less than 10 percent market share in the three-quarter-ton and one-ton truck segments. Its 6.2-liter and 6.5-liter diesel engines weren't competitive with the mills in Ford's and Dodge's trucks. But GM's joint venture engineering and manufacturing agreement with Isuzu Motors of Japan changed all of that. With Isuzu's help, the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500 pickup trucks debuted with the all-new 6.6-liter V-8 turbodiesel. It broke new ground in horsepower, torque and fuel economy and helped GM jump to more than 30 percent market share by 2002.

2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

Why It's Significant: Combined the best attributes of a full-size SUV and pickup truck in a single vehicle.

The wild looking Chevrolet Avalanche debuted as a lightly disguised concept at the 2000 NAIAS. GM intended to build it to fill the gap between the Suburban and Silverado full-size trucks. Its convert-a-cab system made it versatile for carrying passengers or cargo by offering pass-through access between the cabin and bed and a removable rear window. Unibody exterior styling was unique, as well as its use of a multi-link rear suspension and composite bed -- traits that would be reused later in the decade by the Honda Ridgeline.

2004 Nissan Titan:

Why It's Significant: The first true full-size half-ton pickup truck from a Japanese automaker

Japanese car companies had successfully entered almost every segment of the U.S. car and truck markets except the unique domain of the North American full-size pickup truck when Nissan unveiled the 2004 Titan. Sure, Toyota marginally stuck its toes in the segment with its T100 pickup in 1993 but the T100 was too small and underpowered to ever be a serious contender.

The Titan met about 80 percent of half-ton buyers' needs with its 300-hp, 5.6-liter V-8, an advanced five-speed automatic transmission and a choice of extended cab or crew cab configurations. It quickly gained a loyal following, but later years' sales were hampered by reliability issues with early trucks.

2005 Toyota Tacoma:

Why It's Significant: The best-selling small truck in the U.S.

Small truck sales have dwindled throughout the decade but Toyota has managed to keep sales of the Tacoma relatively strong and take market share in this neglected segment. Just before the turn of the century, the Ford Ranger outsold Tacoma by more than 2-to-1, today it's the exact opposite. The Tacoma offers a broad lineup of cab, body, wheelbase and engine choices with strong capabilities and excellent performance and refinement. What more could a small truck buyer want if they're not going to buy a full-size pickup?

2006 Honda Ridgeline

Why It's Significant: Created a class of one with its unique unibody construction and a trunk in the bed.

Love it or hate it (there's no in-between), the Honda Ridgeline did what Japanese pickups have consistently done over the years: Break new ground in terms of form and functionality. The Ridgeline came to market in 2005 with controversial slab-sided lunar-lander looks and all-wheel drive. It did away with conventional leaf springs in favor of an independent rear suspension that gave it great ride comfort and enough room for an in-bed lockable trunk - the first in a pickup. The Ridgeline also featured a dual-action tailgate that folded down or off to the side, like a door, to allow unimpeded access to the cargo box.

2007 Toyota Tundra

Why It's Significant: Toyota's no-holds-barred attempt to gain ground in full-size trucks.

When the 2007 Toyota Tundra debuted it was notable for being two things: big and powerful. But just being big and powerful doesn't automatically sell trucks. Several mechanical issues that garnered high visibility online with truck buyers and a lack of a large loyal buyer base contributed to a huge falloff in Tundra sales after it almost met its first year sales goal of 200,000 units. Today, the Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra and Ram 1500 all offer more powerful V-8 engines than the Tundra and Ford is about to join that group, pushing the Tundra to fourth place for bragging rights. Tundra sales have shrunk to well under 100,000 units per year. It's proof that the domestics still know how to build a superior vehicle.

2009 Dodge Ram 1500:

Why It's Significant: Ditched conventional leaf springs for a coil spring rear axle and added side saddle storage to the cargo box.

The 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 could have impressed many simply for its more powerful Hemi V-8, handsome exterior and totally revised interior but Chrysler carried its half-ton pickup much farther by featuring a coil spring rear axle -- resurrecting an idea that GM had tried from 1967 to 1972 in its C10 and C20 pickups -- that gave the Ram 1500 unparalleled ride comfort and quality for a half-ton pickup. Towing was limited to only 9,100 pounds but after a year of additional testing and real world results, Dodge re-rated the Ram 1500 to tow up to 10,450 pounds.

2009 Ford F-150: MOST SIGNIFICANT OF THE DECADE

Why It's Significant: Remains the gold standard against which other half-ton pickup trucks are compared.

Ford gave its F-150 half-ton pickup a major revision for 2009 and gave buyers an astonishing seven different models to choose from before they even considered engine choice or cab type. Two more models have been added for 2010! It's not the most powerful truck but the F-150 features an excellent six-speed transmission and innovative features like Ford Work Solutions that make doing jobs with a truck easier. From contractor to urban cowboy, Ford has an F-150 to meet almost anyone's needs.

2010 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor:

Why It's Significant: Ford had the guts to build a go-fast pre-runner-style factory pickup for under $40K

There's nothing else like the 2010 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor and there likely may never be. It features a unique Fox Racing long-travel suspension that has a full 11-inches of travel in the front dampers to absorb the impact from jumps - jumps! - made in the desert at speeds of up to 100 mph. It's six-speed transmission is specially tuned with an off-road mode and there's a rear locking differential that works in two-wheel or four-wheel drive at speeds up to 66 mph. When other truck manufacturers mumble to themselves about the truck they wish they had in their lineup, Raptor is usually the first word that falls from their lips.

Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com Names Most-Researched New Vehicles for 2009, Brands With Greatest Share of Market Interest This Year

RVINE, Calif., Dec. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Kelley Blue Book, the leading provider of new and used car information, today announces the most-researched new vehicles of 2009 on the company's top-rated Web site, www.kbb.com. In addition, Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com reveals the top five brands with the greatest share of market interest for 2009.

This year marks the fourth consecutive year that Kelley Blue Book saw increased visitation to its Web site, with nearly 180 million visits to kbb.com in 2009. Because kbb.com is one of the most-trafficked automotive research sites, visitation to specific vehicles has become a leading indicator of sales patterns for manufacturers.

Kbb.com's Top 20 Most-Researched New Vehicles of 2009

1. Honda Accord
2. Honda Civic
3. Toyota Camry
4. Honda CR-V
5. Toyota Corolla
6. Toyota RAV4
7. Toyota Highlander
8. Toyota Prius
9. Nissan Altima
10. Honda Pilot
11. Ford Escape
12. Chevrolet Camaro
13. Honda Odyssey
14. Ford Fusion
15. Mazda3
16. Ford Mustang
17. Volkswagen Jetta
18. Toyota Sienna
19. Lexus RX 350
20. Chevrolet Equinox

The Honda Civic, Honda Accord and Toyota Camry (in varying orders each year) have been the top three most-researched new-vehicles on kbb.com each year since 2004. However, many vehicles made noteworthy jumps into the top 20 most-researched new-vehicles for 2009 that were not on the list in 2008. Chevrolet's all-new redesigned Equinox and Camaro models both grace this year's list for the first time. Also new to this year's top 20 are the recently revamped Lexus RX 350 and the popular, fast-selling Ford Fusion.

The stabilization in gas prices for 2009 has indicated a trend away from smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles over the past year, and thus some popular small cars that were among the most-researched in 2008 have fallen off the list for 2009. Subcompact cars like the Toyota Yaris and Honda Fit, along with the compact MINI Cooper, were among the most-researched new cars last year, but do not hold court among the most-researched models this year. In addition, Chevy's Malibu, redesigned for the 2008 model-year and featured on last year's 'most-researched' list, has seen some of its popularity fade over the past year, no longer listing among the top 20 most-researched new cars of 2009.

"The site traffic on Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com demonstrates what is on the minds of today's new-car shoppers, especially when examining the most-researched new-vehicles of 2009," said James Bell, executive market analyst for Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com. "Declined interest in smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles and increased popularity in attractive, recently redesigned models is an accurate reflection of the marketplace in 2009. We also see that consumers are reacting well to new models and redesigns from domestic manufacturers like Chevy and Ford, which bodes well for their future sales numbers."

Top Five Brands with Greatest Share of Market Interest on Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com for 2009

1. Toyota
2. Honda
3. Ford
4. Chevrolet
5. Nissan

Toyota, Honda, Ford, Chevrolet and Nissan (respectively) are the top five brands with the highest share of market interest -- defined as the percent of new-car shopper activity for a particular brand -- on Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com for 2009. Of those brands, Ford saw the most growth throughout the course of the year, with its share rising steadily in the first half of the year and peaking during the summer months, benefitting as the only domestic manufacturer that did not require a bailout or undergo bankruptcy. Ford also benefitted from the "Cash-for-Clunkers" program during the summer of 2009, due to its aggressive promotion of the program.

FORD FIRST TO ENABLE iTUNES TAGGING WITH LAUNCH OF NEW HD RADIO CAPABILITY IN ITS LINEUP

DEARBORN, Mich., Dec. 29, 2009 – iTunes Tagging and crystal-clear radio sound through HD Radio technology are the latest features on Ford’s growing list of factory-installed customer conveniences and technologies that will be newly available in 2010.

HD Radio receivers pull in digital radio signals and play them with dramatically improved sound. FM stations, for example, have near-CD quality, making it convenient for customers to select songs they want to download and purchase.

“iTunes Tagging and HD Radio technology are strong new additions to the growing collection of Ford convenience features and technology we’re offering customers to make driving even more enjoyable,” said Mark Fields, president of The Americas. “This is another example of Ford’s commitment to bring the widest variety of factory-installed customer-focused technology, features and conveniences to millions of people.”
In 2010, Ford vehicles will offer familiar terrestrial radio, HD Radio technology, SIRIUS® Satellite Radio as well as Internet radio through Ford SYNC® from a Bluetooth®-streaming audio-capable smartphone.

“Ford continues to lead the market in bringing advanced capabilities to popular vehicles. We are very pleased that HD Radio technology is an integral part of Ford’s broad offering of new features,” said Jeff Jury, COO of iBiquity Digital Corporation, the developer of HD Radio technology.

Like the song? You can tag it
The world’s first implementation of iTunes Tagging in a factory-installed HD Radioreceiver will launch in 2010 on select Ford vehicles. Through the SYNC system, iTunes Tagging will provide Ford customers with the ability to capture a song they hear on the HD Radio receiver for later purchase. With a simple push of the “TAG” button on the radio display, the song information will be stored in the radio’s memory.

Up to 100 tags can be stored on SYNC until the iPod is connected to receive the download of metadata. When the iPod is then synced to iTunes, a playlist of “tagged” songs will appear. Customers then can preview and, if desired, purchase and download tagged songs from the iTunes Store.

All HD Radio-enabled receivers in Ford vehicles also will provide Program Service Data – information that appears on the radio screen and includes song title, artist name and more.

Familiar controls with better quality
HD Radio technology enables more listening options and increased sound quality by using the same radio interface customers are used to as well as the same antennas and analog tuners with an added digital decoder inside the radio. Additionally, HD Radio-enabled receivers provide listeners with unique advanced services.
To operate, there’s no difference from today’s radio operations – customers just tune in their favorite stations. If the station is broadcasting with HD Radio technology, the system automatically picks up the signal and will transition to digital audio once decoded.

Exclusive to HD Radio receivers are HD2/HD3 channels, which resemble mini-stations that could be spun off the “mother” station or completely new content for the local market. HD2/HD3 channels are found directly adjacent to the main (HD1) channel on the dial if available.

If additional HD2/HD3 channels are available, the radio will indicate how many on a multicast information bar. Users may tune up to the new available channels like they would tune to any other analog station. Users also may store HD2/HD3 presets, just as they do with today’s radio.

HD Radio technology enables better audio and exclusive unique content choices
One significant benefit of HD Radio technology is that the sound quality of the broadcast is dramatically better because of the digital transmission – FM sounds like a CD and AM sounds like terrestrial FM broadcasts. Also, the sound itself is much clearer and more consistent, without issues such as pops or hisses. Unlike analog broadcasts, digital broadcasts aren’t susceptible to interference, fadeout and other issues.

Most stations use the additional HD2/HD3 channels to provide more unique coverage of sports, music or other niche programs often tailored for their individual markets – all for free. For example, in Dallas there is now a dedicated 24/7 Cowboys channel on 105.3-HD3. In Pittsburgh, there is a dedicated 24/7 Penguins channel on 105.9-HD2.Broadcasters may choose any genre they wish for their additional channels.

Nearly 2,000 radio stations in the U.S. currently broadcast in digital HD Radio sound, with more than 1,100 stations also airing HD2/HD3 channels. Approximately 85 percent of the U.S. population is served by a station broadcasting with HD Radio technology.

Cadillac Bringing CTS-V Coupe, Mystery Concept to 2010

Cadillac has revealed that a V-Series high-performance variant of the new 2011 Cadillac CTS Coupe will share the spotlight with a new concept at the Detroit auto show next month. The concept is believed to be a pre-production version of either the ATS or XTS small and large cars that Cadillac has been teasing over the past year or so.

So far, Cadillac has released only this tightly cropped teaser picture of the unnamed concept and the promise that it will showcase the latest advances in Cadillac's Art and Science design language. While the picture purposely obscures the vehicle, we can see that it is a sedan and bears significant resemblance to the current CTS but with new headlights and mirrors likely too small to see production.

Based on information provided by our own Todd Lassa during a no-photographs open house at GM headquarters back in August, we believe this concept is the XTS. Lassa described the XTS as having a short axle-to-dash ratio and a grille that blended styling elements of the Sixteen and Converj concepts. The car he was shown was also painted gray while the ATS was painted blue, though GM has had more than enough time to repaint them. The ATS, meanwhile, was described as having a shorter, wider grille to make the car look wider, not taller. This picture appears to suggest a larger car, but the angle makes it difficult to be certain.

If it is the XTS, it will most likely be built on a stretched version of GM's Epsilon II FWD architecture and will likely feature the 3.6L direct-injection V-6 engine and will offer AWD. If it's the ATS, it will be RWD-based and will likely utilize both V-6 and four-cylinder engines. Both cars are planned for a 2011 debut likely as 2012 models.

What do you think? Are we looking at the long-awaited STS/DTS replacement known as XTS, or is this the BMW 3-Series-fighting ATS? Make your guess in the comments below and stay tuned to Motor Trend's complete coverage of the 2010 North American International Auto Show, live from Detroit.

EPA Ruling Makes Retrofitting Transit and Fleet Vehicles Imperative

CHICAGO, Illinois – December 14, 2009 – With the recent declaration by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that greenhouse gases are dangerous pollutants, municipalities and businesses throughout the country are faced with the challenge of reducing the emissions and fuel consumption of their fleet vehicles. Recaptured Energy Technologies has an efficient, workable solution.

“The EPA ruling, coupled with the international climate summit in Copenhagen and President Obama’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gases, shows that the U.S. can no longer wait to curb emissions and increase fuel economy of transit and fleet vehicles,” said Sam Jones, president and founder of Recaptured Energy Technologies. “Time is of the essence. Recaptured Energy Technologies offers viable economic solutions that can make an immediate impact without the cost of purchasing new hybrid vehicles.”

Recaptured Energy Technologies has developed a unique hydraulic braking and propulsion system that it is designed specifically to be retrofit to existing vehicles. The system captures wasted brake energy and converts it to an auxiliary source of energy to power the vehicle. The realized reduction in harmful emissions from a renewable source of energy is a “green” benefit and the reduction in fuel consumption and added years of useful life are economic advantages as well.

“Many organizations think they will be forced to purchase a fleet of new hybrid vehicles to meet governmental standards,” continued Jones. “These decision makers need to know that Recaptured Energy Technologies has a system in place that can save them millions of dollars and help them meet any federal guidelines head-on.”

About Recaptured Energy Technologies
Headquartered in Chicago, Recaptured Energy Technologies (RET) is a leader in providing energy solutions for fleet, commercial and transit vehicles. RET helps government agencies, fleet managers and corporations improve fuel economy, reduce emissions and lower vehicle maintenance costs through energy optimization. National Biodiesel Conference brings bright spark to dark days

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The year 2009 challenged the biodiesel industry like never before. High feedstock costs, a global credit crisis, a recession with dropping diesel prices and uncertain federal policy signals pushed the industry to the brink. And yet, even in the face of this adversity, the long term outlook looks good. Those who hope to emerge on the other side, in what will hopefully begin a new era for biodiesel, will be made stronger by attending the 2010 National Biodiesel Conference & Expo, Feb. 7 - 10 in Grapevine, Texas.

The 2010 conference theme is, "Today's Challenges. Tomorrow’s Impact."

"Being committed to biodiesel is like a marriage – you take it for better or for worse. And we're in the middle of worse," said Joe Jobe, CEO of the National Biodiesel Board. "But our industry has shown resilience through hardship, and this conference will focus on finding the insight needed to help businesses weather thestorm. There are brighter days coming."

Those who attended the conference in 2008 will remember Don Reynolds, who predicted that unemployment would top 10 percent, that housing market would decline by 25 percent, and the financial market meltdown. This popular economic forecaster will be back to help answer this question: When it comes to the business environment, what is the "new normal?"

Attendees will also hear from Dr. Michael Shermer, who is the Founding Publisher of Skeptic magazine and a monthly columnist for Scientific American. He will give a keynote address on overcoming the pseudo-science that has threatened to cost America the proven benefits that biodiesel has delivered.

Hosted by the National Biodiesel Board, NBB has developed rich educational sessions, including:
• Leaders from all levels of the petroleum supply chain on how biodiesel fits into their future business strategies. This will be especially timely as the federal Renewable Fuels Standard inches towards implementation.
• Potential breakthroughs in new feedstock development.
• Legislative developments impacting biodiesel.
• Biodiesel's role in the clean and green diesel revolution.
• Winning biodiesel markets, like Bioheat.
Texas is a leading biodiesel state, with more production capacity than any other state. Joining forces with the Biodiesel Coalition of Texas, several sessions highlight the Texas industry.

"We are very proud to host the National Biodiesel Conference in the Dallas-Fort Worth area," said Mindy Mize, a Clean Cities Co-Coordinator for DFW. Clean Cities is a Department of Energy program targeted at petroleum reduction through the use of alternative fuels. "We are home to a biodiesel plant and many biodiesel users, including the Cities of Dallas, Irving, and Fort Worth, as well as Denton Public Schools and more. All of them have a great story to tell and help make our area a national leader in biodiesel." To facilitate networking and to provide a "free-flow" of discussion around a topic of interest to many biodiesel stakeholders, NBB has added several "conversessions". Each session will be moderated by an expert and will include ample time for Q&A among and between attendees.

The latest in diesel technology again will be displayed in a Diesel Vehicle Showcase, and a Ride-and-Drive for conference attendees.

The conference will be held at the magnificent Gaylord Texan just minutes from the Dallas-Ft. Worth Airport. To register and view the conference program, visit www.biodieselconference.org.

California Counties, Cities and Government Agencies Select Networkfleet to Reduce Fuel Consumption and Lower Emissions

SAN DIEGO – December 15, 2009 – Networkfleet, a leader in wireless fleet management, today announced that the cities of Richmond and Oakland as well as San Diego County and the Alameda County Water District, have selected Networkfleet® to reduce fuel consumption and lower vehicle emissions. This adds to a growing list of California government agencies turning to Networkfleet to reduce fleet operating costs, including the counties of Los Angeles, San Bernardino, and Sonoma and the cities of Irvine, Napa and Glendora, among others.

With tightening budgets, government agencies are using Networkfleet to improve fleet utilization, lower operating costs and remotely monitor engine diagnostics. This gives public fleets the ability to monitor and reduce vehicle usage. It also helps them to identify and repair engine problems early and avoid expensive repair costs.

Public fleets are also choosing Networkfleet due to its ability to reduce fuel consumption and lower greenhouse gas emissions. Networkfleet checks vehicle emissions status continuously and notifies the fleet manager immediately if there is a problem so that it can be fixed. In California, fleets can enroll in the Continuous Testing Program to eliminate physical smog checks. Networkfleet’s continuous emissions monitoring, combined with the system’s ability to reduce fuel usage, lower idle time, reduce vehicle speed and miles traveled, has a significant impact on reducing harmful emissions.

“State and local governments are facing serious budget shortfalls while also developing strategies to deal with the challenges of climate change. Networkfleet can assist in both these areas by reducing operating costs and lowering emissions,” said Keith Schneider, president of Networkfleet. “In addition, Networkfleet is working to institute programs in other states similar to that in California so that vehicles can be smog checked continuously rather than every two years. This will help agencies in other states to reach their emission reduction goals.”

About Networkfleet
Networkfleet, Inc. is a leading provider of wireless fleet management services that improve fleet operating efficiency by reducing fuel consumption, maintenance expenses and vehicle emissions. The company’s technology combines patented remote diagnostic monitoring with GPS-based Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) systems. With access to more than 50 patents issued or pending, the company received the 2008 AeA High Tech award and was a finalist in Connect’s 2008 Most Innovative Product Award for clean technology. Founded in 1999, Networkfleet is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hughes Telematics, Inc. and is headquartered in San Diego, CA. For more information, please visit www.networkfleet.com.

National Automobile Museum’s 20th Anniversary Celebration Features New Exhibits & More

The National Automobile Museum is marking its 20th Anniversary of combining history with education and entertainment by hosting unique, impressive and unusual exhibits in 2010.
Debuting at the National Automobile Museum will be:
• A Masterpiece Exhibit focusing on the Motoring Tourist: National Park Adventure. In the early decades of the 20th century, automobiles connected man and nature as never before. The National Park-to-Park Highway, an auto trail forming a large loop through the West connected 12 national parks and paved the way for millions to enjoy the nation’s natural wonders. The New Highway’s slogan was: “You Sing America, Why Not See It?” Motoring tourists loved the accessibility of the National Parks and suppliers of camping gear tapped their creativity to meet new needs of the motoring tourist. Enjoy this exhibit and explore our wilderness on wheels starting April 19, 2010.

• WW I Gets Motorized in the Changing Exhibits Gallery. Man and beast powered transportation during wars until World War I when motorized vehicles met the challenge. Used for transporting troops, removing injured from battlefields, moving supplies and weaponry, motorized vehicles frequently saved the day. Many vehicles created for one specific use were put into service – literally— for another application altogether during the war years. Opening date for this exhibit is also April 19th.

Concluding Exhibits
Some popular National Automobile Museum exhibits will conclude their run in 2010.
• Movie Cars: Cinematic Stars on Wheels, a Masterpiece Exhibit, will conclude mid-March. Horsepower, not star power, drove the movie cars in this exhibit to cinematic fame. When it comes to movie cars, these wheeled-wonders were the superstars of the screen. You’ll still have a chance to rub “fenders” with them until March 26, 2010.

• On the Road with Alice Ramsey: 100 Years Ago in the Changing Exhibits Gallery concludes mid-March. Young Alice Ramsey drove into history in 1909 when she claimed the title of the first woman to drive coast-to-coast. The 22-year-old mother and her three female companions (none of whom drove) set off from New York in a 1909 Maxwell and arrived in San Francisco 59 days later. Check this exhibit out before it closes on March 15th .

• Roadside Attractions, the photography of Howard Goldbaum, captures unique elements of Americana. These “roadside attractions” and the many artifacts and personalities he came in contact with during his 15,000-mile- journey were captured on film to provide smiles to those who see them. The last day for this exhibit will be March 15th.

Continuing Daily
• 1908 New York to Paris Around The World Race Featuring the Winning Car: The 1907 Thomas Flyer continues with its place of honor in Gallery Four at the National Automobile Museum. The exhibit tells the epic story of the longest, most grueling race in automotive history and features the winning car, the Museum’s 1097 Thomas Flyer. The race was a contest of man and machine against unimaginable odds.
• Even in Africa, paintings by Robert Cinkel in the Entrance Hallway Gallery is a series of paintings by Reno artist Robert Cinkel depicting automobiles from the Museum’s collection in intriguing locals -- from a starry night in the Nevada desert to India, Egypt and “even in Africa.”

UK Government Initiatives Aim to Stimulate Electric Vehicle Industry

AUSTIN, TX (Dec. 18, 2009) – Two innovative initiatives aimed at encouraging the use of electric vehicles on British roads have been announced recently by the UK Government. These initiatives could benefit customers for Valence Technology’s advanced lithium ion propulsion solutions.

Announced by the UK Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling, the first initiative is a tax break allowing purchasers of electric vans to waive certain taxes in their first year on the road. Valence customers such as Smith Electric Vehicles and Paneltex produce vans of the type identified in the Chancellor’s announcement.

The second initiative stems from a UK Government established £30 million Green Bus Fund created to incentivize the manufacturing and sales of low carbon buses across the country. Bus route operators were recently awarded with these new government funds to purchase electric buses, helping reduce the carbon footprint across the country.

Before orders are placed with the bus manufacturers, individual bus operators will be finalizing route selections and determining their respective transportation needs. Original route operator funding requests included buses from several manufacturers, including two Valence customers, Wrightbus of Northern Ireland, and Optare, based in Blackburn and Leeds in England. According to the UK Department of Transport, buses under this initiative will start to operate by the summer of 2010.

Robert L. Kanode, president & CEO of Valence Technology commented, “We have been active in the light commercial and bus market for many years. The success of our client’s efforts with these latest initiatives endorses Valence technology as a key player in the growing acceptance of electrically powered vehicles by the motive market. We look forward to continuing our efforts to provide environmentally acceptable alternative solutions to the motive markets.”

About Valence Technology, Inc. Valence Technology is an international leader in the development of lithium phosphate energy storage solutions. The company has redefined lithium battery technology and performance by marketing the industry’s first safe, reliable and rechargeable lithium iron magnesium phosphate battery. Founded in 1989, Valence today offers a proven technology and manufacturing infrastructure that delivers ISO-certified products and processes that are protected by an extensive global patent portfolio. Headquartered in Austin, Texas, Valence has facilities in Nevada, China and Northern Ireland. Valence is traded on the NASDAQ Capital Market under the ticker symbol VLNC. Safe Harbor Statement. This press release contains forward-looking statements within the meaning of the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995. Actual results may vary substantially from these forward-looking statements as a result of a variety of factors, including whether the UK initiatives will lead to any purchases of Valence’s energy storage solutions. The risk factors that could affect actual results are discussed in our periodic reports filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, including our Report on Form 10-K for the year ended March 31, 2009, and the reader is directed to these statements for a further discussion of important factors that could cause actual results to differ materially from those in the forward-looking statements.

City of Noblesville Puts New Kenworth T470s To Work Clearing Snow

First City To Purchase New Kenworth Model

NOBLESVILLE, Ind., Dec. 21, 2009 – The new Kenworth T470s were barely in service, and Len Finchum, street commissioner for the City of Noblesville, was already getting calls from other Indiana cities and municipalities.

“They wanted to be first in line on the trucks when we’re ready to sell them at the end of our five- to six-year trade cycle,” he said with a grin. “I guess that tells you what other managers in our area think of Kenworths and the way we maintain our vehicles. They want the reliability and durability that a Kenworth offers.”

Noblesville was the first city in the country to order the Kenworth T470s, and 13 were recently delivered, outfitted with snowplows and 10- to 13-yard dump bodies. The city purchased the trucks through Kenworth of Indianapolis.

Each of the eight tandem-axle Kenworth T470s snowplows hauls 13- to 15 tons of a mixture of salt and magnesium chloride. Two tanks, each holding 75 gallons of calcium chloride – a liquid deicer – are mounted to opposite sides of the curved dump body. After the plow clears the lane, the deicer is laid down in concert with the salt mixture. The single-axle Kenworths are used to carry 6 to 8 tons of salt and support tanks for deicing. Equipped with Cummins ISL engines rated at 345 hp with 1,150 ft-lbs of torque, and driven through Allison automatics, the T470s have locking differentials to ensure added traction.

The city services a growing population base of 50,000, covering 232 miles of road, and is located eight miles north of Indianapolis. “We’re in Hamilton County, which is one of the fastest growing in the United States,” said Finchum. “Last year the county grew 13 percent. So, there are more housing developments to cover and more citizens to keep happy with clear streets. We normally have around a dozen major snow episodes a year, and around three ice storms. People here expect wet streets, not icy or snow-laden streets. We can’t afford poor performance.”

After the snow season, which runs from November through March, the plows will come off and the Kenworth T470s will be utilized as all-purpose dump trucks for sand, gravel, and asphalt hauling, patching roads and repairing sidewalks.

According to Finchum, the city “thought it was unreal” it could get Kenworth T470s within its budget. “These are the first Kenworths our city has ever had and they are the perfect size for our application as combination snowplows, and dump trucks,” Finchum said. “A full-size Class 8 was really overkill for our city, and a medium duty truck was too light. The Kenworth T470 is the perfect size as it has enough beef in the frame for snowplow support and the right components to handle our operation. And the quality of the Kenworth is a definite upgrade from what we were running.

“We have some very narrow streets and cul-de-sacs and the single-axle Kenworths are incredibly maneuverable in those tight spots,” said Finchum. “The tandem-axle Kenworths carry the load in outlying areas, but we’ve found their turning radius is even better than the single axle trucks they replaced. That’s saying something.”

The Kenworth T470 has a gross vehicle rating (GVW) ranging from a heavy Class 7 vehicle at 33,000 lbs. up to a light Class 8 truck at 68,000 lbs., and is for snowplow, dump, mixer, winch, refuse, and other heavy front-axle vocational and municipal applications requiring front frame extensions. The vehicle offers full parent rail extensions, delivering maximum resistance to bending moment (RBM) from one end of the rail to the other. The T470 is available with 12,000 to 22,000 lb. front axles, 21,000 to 26,000 lb. single rear axles, and 40,000 to 46,000 lb. tandem rear axles.

Finchum said driver comments have been positive. “The cab is a bit bigger than what we’re used to and that’s a big help since some of our guys are 6-feet, 2-inches to 6-feet, 5-inches. They say it’s the best riding truck they’ve had. They’ve been grinning ever since the Kenworths were delivered. They’re loving it.”

So are mechanics and technicians at the City of Noblesville. “They like the engine compartment – it’s very easy to work in and service,” said Finchum. “And the color-coded wiring is great for easy servicing.

“The support we get from Kenworth of Indianapolis is, hands-down, the best and most professional we’ve had,” added Finchum. “When we asked those in the bidding process how they’d handle certain situations, they’d often say ‘we’d have you call these people.’ But at Kenworth of Indianapolis, they said ‘you’d call us.’ They showed they wanted to be an integral and valued partner in our operation. They want us to succeed.”

Kenworth’s quality products, combined with excellent dealer support from dealers such as Kenworth of Indianapolis, contributed to Kenworth receiving the 2009 J.D. Power and Associates award for “Highest in Customer Satisfaction for Heavy Duty Dealer Service.”*
