NEW Schneider Logistics’ Service Delivers Long-Awaited Domestic and International Supply Chain Synchronization for Shippers

GREEN BAY, Wis. – (July 28, 2010) - An innovative Inland Logistics Management service launched recently by Schneider Logistics, a leading global logistics provider and part of the Schneider National enterprise, is bringing to international shippers something they’ve long awaited: synchronization of international and domestic supply chains that delivers significant supply chain efficiencies and cost savings.

The new service was developed in collaboration with an international retailer in 2009. Last month, Schneider was recognized as a Best Third-Party Logistics provider by VICS (Voluntary Interindustry Commerce Solutions Association) for the “innovative thinking, supply chain excellence and impressive results” the new Inland Logistics Management service is delivering in only its first year.

“Schneider’s Inland Logistics Management service integrates port drayage, container management and technology while providing actionable data from every step in the international supply chain in a way never done before,” said Todd Ericksrud, vice president of Inland Logistics Management for Schneider Logistics. “Not only is the new service saving shippers millions, it allows extensive supply chain visibility within an organization. From supply chain leaders to buyers and everyone in between, this tool allows everyone to have visibility to milestone and item level details so that products can be imported and exported more efficiently.”

According to Ericksrud, the service provides a single snapshot of activity from multiple supply chain trading entities, including steamship lines, terminals, custom brokers, dray carriers and distribution centers. With this information, Schneider can couple international milestone visibility with port dray management, and in turn synchronize international and domestic supply chain events for shippers. Shippers, in turn, have actionable data, visibility and control to dramatically lower their overall transportation cost.

During development of the new service, the resulting data, visibility and control allowed the international retailer and Schneider to manage 20 milestone events and identify hidden supply chain costs. The result of the collaboration: the shipper eliminated seven days in-transit and reduced its annual dray cost by 20 percent. The program has already yielded millions of dollars in savings, and working with other existing customers, Schneider has identified an estimated $100 million in additional near-term cost savings. Schneider is confident that other international shippers will realize significant savings in transit time and costs as well as renewed confidence in the reliability of their direct import supply chain.

“This innovation really represents the first major solution that tackles importers’ age-old issue of dealing with the ‘dray and port black hole’— the lack of visibility to port-related activities,” added John Ferguson, vice president of International Services for Schneider Logistics. “Until now, shippers relied on a single dray provider in every market and were not able to take advantage of port diversification and the scale advantage of a national program. The Inland Logistics Management service allows us to create one central container management system across multiple ports and many dray providers to deliver more consistent, reliable pricing and capacity for customers. There’s tremendous value in this service for international shippers.”

Savannah Office Relocation Further Highlights Schneider’s Port Commitment

In early 2010, the team leading Schneider’s International Services moved into new office space in the Savannah area. The new location, 250 Grange Road in Savannah, puts Schneider Logistics associates just minutes away from the Port of Savannah and directly in the middle of the company’s warehousing, transloading and port dray activity.

“Both our customers and dray drivers benefit from the relocation,” said Ferguson. “Our drivers can now move containers more easily in and out of the port simply because we’re closer to the point of entry for imports. This proximity, combined with our 1.5 million square feet of warehouse space in the area, means drivers can move more containers in a day. In turn, customer freight keeps moving through this vital link in their supply chain with fewer starts and stops, and with fewer hassles.”

Schneider Logistics International Services includes freight forwarding, contract warehousing, transloading and distribution, drayage, inland logistics management and China solutions. Schneider has a nationwide network of port transloading facilities and contract warehouses, with more than nine million square feet of warehouse space.
