OKLAHOMA CITY (Oct. 10, 2012) – While it
may appear more like drama reserved for the silver screen, use of GPS tracking
devices has taken on real-life appeal, both with individuals and corporations
large and small. Recently, this fact was magnified in two separate instances
with the recent theft and quick recovery of two commercial trucks from two
different companies.
Acting in sync with Oklahoma-based US Fleet Tracking's live GPS
tracking devices, J&L Oilfield Services, which has nearly 140 trucks,
recovered one of their fleet trucks within hours of its reported theft. The
vehicle, stolen in Weatherford, Okla. could be seen on the web-based tracking
platform traveling hours away in Texas. J&L's dispatcher communicated the
live whereabouts of the truck to police, who went straight there, surprising
the thief. The truck was back at company headquarters within 48 hours and the
thief arrested.
J&L's Service Manager, Hugh Landers, noted that recovering
this one vehicle paid for an entire year’s use of the tracking service stating,
“It's as much as anything about peace of mind. We need to know that our
vehicles are available whenever we need them, day or night. With multiple
drivers using the same trucks, knowing the vehicles are safe while unattended,
and that the right people are behind the wheel is essential for us.”
Landers said internal efficiencies at the J&L Oilfield
Services have been greatly improved using features of the US Fleet Tracking
devices, and in this case the live GPS tracking was the difference-maker.
“We didn't even have the door lock, panic setting or ignition
cutoff features activated. Our dispatcher followed the truck's movement online,
while he spoke to police,” added Landers. “If we'd activated those other
features beforehand, that guy in the truck really would have been shocked!”
In another instance, Equipment Technology, Inc., based in
Oklahoma City, retrieved its stolen truck, leased in New Mexico, within minutes
of noticing it was gone.
Brian Carver, Equipment Technology lease/rental manager, learned
of the truck theft and realized this was one of 39 vehicles he had equipped
with a US Fleet Tracking GPS device. Communicating with Lee County officials in
New Mexico, Brian watched the truck as it tracked on the web-based platform and
guided officers to the precise location of the vehicle. Officials went, the
vehicle was found undamaged and the $80,000 truck was returned to the customer.
The online historical playback report showed where the vehicle had traveled and
stops made while on its journey and provided the information necessary to
arrest the thieves.
“US Fleet Tracking's devices give me a lot of peace of mind,”
Carver continued. “Not only from a security standpoint, but they alert me with
emails when my long-term lease customers need to perform maintenance. I know
we're saving money, but it's more than that. It lets the customer know we're
working for them.”
Carver has championed the use of US Fleet Tracking's devices to
many of his customers for their company-owned vehicles.
“This episode made them believers. They now see the value of
these trackers,” said Carver.
