Trucking Industry Defense Association’s Endowment Program Awards Grant to Cuyahoga Community College Foundation

Niles, Ill., August 12, 2010—The Trucking Industry Defense Association (TIDA) is pleased to announce that after an extensive review by the organization’s Endowment Committee, it will award one of four Endowment Fund Grants in the amount of $5,000 to the Ohio-based Cuyahoga Community College Foundation (Tri-C).

The grant, which will be presented at Tri-C on Aug. 19 at 10:00 a.m. EST, is particularly special to TIDA Endowment Committee Chair and previous TIDA President Paul Berne and TIDA General Counsel and Board Member Joe Pappalardo. Both individuals, who will present the award, have close ties to Ohio, as Berne is a Senior Vice President with Lancer Insurance Company—a Long Beach, NY-based company with offices in Highland Heights—and Pappalardo is a senior partner at Gallagher Sharp, a Cleveland-based law firm.

Berne said, “We are very proud to present Cuyahoga Community College with this grant. After rigorously reviewing applications, we believe the school’s curriculum is well-aligned with TIDA’s vision and goals.”

With a membership of more than 1,600 trucking professionals, TIDA was founded in 1993 as a national organization committed to engaging in actions and activities that reduce loss costs to the trucking industry. Members include motor carriers, transportation logistics companies, insurers of motor carriers, third party claims administrators and defense counsel.

Cuyahoga Community College, founded in 1963, is Ohio’s first and largest community college and currently ranks first in Ohio and 45th nationally in conferring associate degrees. Tri-C’s mission is to provide high quality, accessible, and affordable educational opportunities and services that promote individual development and diversity.

“We are honored by this recognition of the quality education we provide to our students, who will knowledgably and positively influence the trucking industry’s essential role in America’s transportation system,” said Kay Moormann, Vice President of Workforce Solutions at Cuyahoga Community College. “The grant from TIDA will allow us to elevate our financial accommodations for students pursuing a career within the trucking industry or related fields.”

TIDA’s mission is focused on propelling all aspects of the trucking industry forward. “Tri-C’s Truck Driving Academy plays a vital role in trucking industry education, which is the basis of any successful industry,” said Pappalardo.

The 18th Annual TIDA Industry Seminar will be held Nov. 8-10 at the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress Hotel in Orlando, Fla. It will feature a Nov. 8 golf outing and industry-specific seminars and breakout sessions.

Also, for the first time, TIDA is offering members, spouses, and guests an opportunity to volunteer for Give Kids The World Village, (GKTW) a 70-acre non-profit resort in Central Florida that creates magical memories for children with life-threatening illnesses.

TIDA will be packing colorful gift boxes for families that contain photo albums, disposable cameras, games, cards, etc.
