Better transportation management practices improve fleet utilization, says Chevin

Improved oversight of the fleet relocation process helps fleets massively increase equipment utilization through technology.

So believes Chevin Fleet Solutions, which reports that it has worked with a number of fleets in recent months that are using its fleet management software to improve operational efficiencies and reduce downtime.

Senior Vice President, North American Sales Ron Katz said: “This is especially relevant to fleets that operate expensive and specialized equipment, such as utilities, equipment rental companies and fleets that serve the energy sectors.

“If you operate a piece of equipment that’s charged out at a rate of hundreds or even thousands of dollars a day, then maximizing the equipment’s productivity is crucial; but, in practice, the equipment may be left unused for days or even weeks at a time because of poor transportation oversight.

“We continue to work with our clients to ensure, first, that equipment is properly accounted for and maintained between assignments and, second, that the relocation of the equipment is carried out as quickly and efficiently as possible.

“If you need to get a piece of equipment from Arizona to New Jersey, then the delays and costs of shipping is a major consideration. Using the transportation management tools within our enterprise fleet management software provides a much higher degree of structure to what is typically a loose process resulting in significant increases in equipment availability and utilization.  As a result, the productivity (or profitability) per unit can be driven much higher very quickly.

Ron added that using the imbedded tools within Chevin’s software and focusing attention on this important area of a fleet’s operation is gaining traction particularly in the energy sectors where high cost and specialized equipment is in demand.

He said: “The rapid expansion of oil and gas recovery across North America using enhanced recovery methods such as hydraulic fracturing means that specialized and high cost equipment needs to be constantly relocated across large areas of the country to maximize production and minimize project downtime. If fleets can improve equipment utilization through smarter and timelier transportation services, fleet managers are able to create real value for their organizations.”
