LONG BEACH, Calif. (April 18, 2011) – Buying a used car or truck can be frightening for consumers, especially knowing that millions of cars are in accidents each year. But now there's a solution – a third-party solution. AiM Mobile Inspections (www.aimmobileinspections.com), which has performed more than 30 million vehicle inspections during the past six years, has published a report based on responses from customers.
"For the millions of used car buyers around the U.S. (who outnumber new car buyers 3-to-1), consider this: Partnering with an expert vehicle inspector creates a clear picture of what the car is or isn't," said Eric Widmer vice president, sales and operations for AiM (Alliance Inspection Management), which employs 500 full-time field technicians across the country. "Many consumers are well-versed in kicking tires, looking at body panels for dents and even being able to notice that an engine is past its prime, but even they need help."
Founded in 2005, AiM is hired by consumers, auto dealers and manufacturers to perform 150-point vehicle inspections that review the condition of body panels, tires, interior and electronics. Additionally, technicians take the vehicle on a road test for analysis of handling, shifting and acceleration. AiM's current clients include Ford, General Motors, Chrysler, Nissan, Avis Budget Group and numerous vehicle auction companies.
According to Widmer, the need for vehicle inspection companies has grown as more and more consumers use the internet to search for a used or new car. "People are afraid of purchasing a lemon and companies like AiM Mobile Inspections give buyers a ‘no worry' tool. Consumers can consider buying a car anywhere in the country because our technicians are in 50 states and provide an accurate report of the cars true condition."
AiM Mobile Inspection recently took a sampling of its thousands of customers. Results include:
• 86 percent are now more confident about buying a vehicle with a third-party vehicle inspection report.
• 93 percent will ask for future vehicles to be inspected, even if the seller has a vehicle history report available.
• 88 percent felt that a vehicle with an inspection report is an excellent or good value.
• 80 percent said they already knew how to inspect a vehicle.

McLAREN SCOOPS TWO AWARDS IN THE 2011 VEHICLE DYNAMICS INTERNATIONAL AWARDS
• Car of the Year: McLaren MP4-12C
• Dynamics Team of the Year: McLaren Automotive
• Dynamicist of the Year: Jürgen Pützschler, Ford
• Innovation of the Year: Electric hydraulic combi brake – Continental
• Development Tool of the Year: Driving simulator – Mercedes-Benz/Moog
• Supplier of the Year: Tenneco
The winners of the Vehicle Dynamics International Awards have today been announced, with McLaren Automotive scooping two prestigious Awards in the year that it launched its eagerly awaited new MP4-12C supercar. The MP4-12C was judged to be the winner of the prestigious Car of the Year Award, while the McLaren Automotive dynamics team won the Dynamics Team of the Year Award for its work on the car.
Also worthy of particular note is Jürgen Pützschler of Ford, who scooped the highly prized award for Dynamicist of the Year title, in recognition of his work as the vehicle dynamics supervisor for the new global C-Car platform, which includes Focus and C-MAX.
"It's been another fascinating year of development, and the judging by our independent panel of experts has been as tough as ever," said Graham Heeps, Editor of Vehicle Dynamics International magazine. "The world was waiting to see how the new McLaren MP4-12C would shape-up at the pinnacle of what the automotive industry has to offer, and it hasn't disappointed. The team in Woking should be enormously proud."
Accepting the award was Mark Vinnels, program director at McLaren Automotive, who said: "This is an important award for us. Not only is it our first car of the year title, but it's in recognition of everything we have put into this car: an obsession with reducing weight, a commitment to using carbon fibre in a revolutionary way, and a thorough understanding of the best ways to integrate our Formula 1 expertise."
Speaking of Jürgen Pützschler's Award for Dynamicist of the Year, Heeps said: "Ford's new C-Car platform will spawn a dozen vehicles, from MPVs to performance cars, and with a high degree of commonality between them. It can be a thankless task to serve so many masters, but on the evidence of the Focus and C-MAX, Pützschler has done a remarkable job."
Other Category award winners include Mercedes Benz and Moog, for their combined work on an outstanding driving simulator, which won Development Tool of the Year; Continental, which won the Innovation of the Year Award for its Electric hydraulic combi brake; and Tenneco, which supplies crucial technology to the McLaren't suspension, and was rewarded with the accolade of Supplier of the Year.

Volkswagen Debuts the Sportiest, Most Fuel-Efficient Beetle Ever
WOLFSBURG, Germany, SHANGHAI, BERLIN, and NEW YORK, April 18, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- When the first Beetle rolled off the production line, it was called simply the Volkswagen — "the people's car" — but its distinctive shape inspired nicknames across the globe: Beetle, Kafer, Vocho, Coccinelle, Fusca or Maggiolino! In total, 21.5 million cars were sold.
More than 60 years later, in 1998, the "New Beetle" rekindled the spirit and imagination of the original to a new generation of Volkswagen owners. The second generation version sparked another round of uplifting and joyous enthusiasm known as Beetle Mania.
Today, the Beetle opens a new chapter in its remarkable story. The third generation of the internationally beloved Beetle is celebrating a transcontinental world debut simultaneously in Shanghai, Berlin and New York.
Updating an icon
Only someone who knows and respects the Beetle's heritage could produce a new generation of this storied vehicle. The task for Volkswagen engineers was clear. They had to develop a modern interpretation of the Beetle, with all the benefits of today's technologies and efficiencies, and the driving characteristics that define the Volkswagen brand. The result had to remain affordable and stay true to the Beetle's spirit and great heritage.
The design of the new Beetle presented another challenge. How does one reinvent a look that is so recognizable and unique? Volkswagen Group Design Chief Walter de Silva and Volkswagen Brand Design Chief, Klaus Bischoff, welcomed the task and set an ambitious objective: "Design a new original!"
The designers wanted to develop the new car around the earliest Beetle profile rather than the 1998 New Beetle. They wanted a car that respects the past but looks toward the future. And that is what they created.
Exterior
The 2012 Beetle is an automotive icon reinvented. Placing the original Beetle and the 21st Century Beetle next to one another, it's clear that the lines of the rear sections are nearly identical, but the overall look is bolder and more dynamic. The Beetle also breaks free of the design geometry defined by three semi-circles (front wing, rear wing, domed roof above it).
"The Beetle is now characterized by a clean, self-confident and dominant sportiness. The car not only has a lower profile; it is also substantially wider, the front hood is longer, the front windshield is shifted further back and has a much steeper incline. All of this creates a new dynamism," explains Klaus Bischoff.
The 2012 Beetle is 71.2 inches wide (3.3 inches wider), 58.5 inches tall (.5 inches lower) and 168.4 inches long (6 inches longer). The new focal point is the C-pillar. The development team also increased the car's track widths and wheelbase. All of this gives the Beetle a powerful appearance with muscular tension.
Another feature is the rear spoiler that is integrated into the design (standard on 2.0L TSI engines with 200 hp). The top surface of the rear spoiler is black, while the underside is painted in body color.
The Beetle is sportier, offering both turbo-charged TDI® Clean Diesel and turbo-charged gasoline engines, in addition to dual exhaust, performance-handling packages, 19-inch wheels, sport seats and new, sleeker styling. Volkswagen will offer a panoramic roof, a range of audio options, including the Fender® Premium Audio System, and a customization program for the 2012 Beetle with a large number of personalization options, including a wide variety of colors and wraps along with an annual theme model.
Interior
The 21st Century Beetle offers an agile, driver-oriented coupe experience with a quality of materials that goes beyond all class limits. The car's styling, ergonomics and quality interact to create a new, friendly car with a highly individual nature.
The shape and use of color in the painted or carbon-look dashboards harkens back to the design of the first Beetle.
Three round instrument gauges are arranged in front of the driver (tachometer, speedometer, fuel gauge) providing all key information at a glance. A multifunction display is integrated in the speedometer in middle position. The steering wheel is specially designed with optional painted accents in the spokes, depending on the equipment line.
Framed by two air vents, the selected audio/navigation system is optimally located in the driver's visual field on the dashboard. Within easy reach, climate controls are situated just below.
Similar to the original Beetle, the new car has an extra glove box integrated into the dash. The lid folds upward, while the standard glove box opens downward. Another classic feature: the optional auxiliary instruments above the selected audio/navigation system: oil temperature, clock with stopwatch function and boost pressure gauge.
The "cathedral ceiling" dome roof of the New Beetle has been replaced with a sleek and sporty roofline. Front and rear passenger headroom remains plentiful. In the rear seating area, the longer roof section results in more space. The trunk is significantly larger, offering 10.9 cubic feet of space. A split-folding rear seat and a wide opening trunk lid ease loading and unloading.
Engine and Transmission
The 2012 Beetle will offer three engines: the 2.5L gasoline five cylinder, the 2.0L TDI® Clean Diesel and the 2.0L TSI® turbocharged gasoline engine. Transmission choices will include a 5-speed manual or optional 6-speed automatic on 2.5L models. Volkswagen's acclaimed DSG® 6-speed dual-clutch transmission will be offered on the TDI Clean Diesel and 2.0L TSI turbocharged gasoline models, while a 6-speed manual will come standard.
The 2012 Beetle 2.0L TDI Clean Diesel is the most fuel-efficient Beetle ever. The quiet, four cylinder 2.0L TDI Clean Diesel engine produces 140 hp and 236 lb.-ft of torque. It meets all U.S. emission limits and offers manufacturer estimates of 40 mpg highway, 29 mpg city, and 33 mpg combined.
Fuel economy values are also improved up to 10 percent over prior 2.5L five cylinder engine models. Mated to a 5-speed manual transmission, it offers manufacturer estimates of 22 mpg city and 31 mpg highway. The optional 6-speed automatic offers manufacturer estimates of 22 mpg city, 29 mpg highway. The five cylinder engine produces 170 hp and 177 lb.-ft of torque.
The Beetle 2.0L TSI is the sportiest model offered. With 200 hp and 207 lb.-ft of torque, power delivery will remain smooth and direct across the rpm range. The four cylinder turbo engine is estimated to provide 30 mpg highway fuel economy. To ensure that power is applied properly in challenging conditions, the 2.0L TSI model features the XDS® cross differential (limited-slip) system. The system electronically monitors input from various wheel sensors and, in the event of slippage, transfers extra torque to the wheel or wheels with the most traction.
Premium Features
The 2012 Volkswagen Beetle will be available in two trim lines: "Design" and "Sport." Each has a unique character. The Beetle can also be customized with a wide choice of optional features. Key features include:
• Radio-CD and radio-navigation systems. Standard in the Beetle is the RCD 310 sound system with 8 speakers (includes dual tuner). The premium VIII top audio system is the RCD 510 with integrated CD changer, interface for SD cards and touchscreen. For the first time ever, navigation will be offered in the Beetle, with the RNS 315 featuring a 5-inch touchscreen, CD player and SD card slot.
• Panoramic roof. The transparent, panoramic tilt/slide glass sunroof is 80 percent larger than on the previous model. The insulating glass blocks 99 percent of UV radiation and 92 percent of heat energy.
• Fender Premium Audio System. The 2012 Beetle will also offer concert-quality sound with an optional Fender Premium Audio System equipped with an additional subwoofer and 400 watts of output power. Embedded in the vehicle design is proprietary Panasonic® speaker technology. The system covers the cabin with directional sound from front door speakers that generate imaging beyond the capabilities of traditional speaker designs. It cuts through the noise and other distractions with front dual voice coil speakers, with extended range for all musical genres. Those choosing this sound system also receive adjustable interior ambiance lighting.
• Keyless Access. Volkswagen's automatic keyless entry and starting system, which allows the driver to operate without a door or ignition key, is appearing for the first time in the Beetle. When one of the front door handles is touched, the system detects access authorization from a transmitter, then unlocks the Beetle and starts the engine with the push of a button.
• BI-XENON™ headlights and LED daytime running lights. For the first time, the Beetle will be offered with Bi-xenon headlights. These will be available on future Beetle models, framing the xenon module on the outer perimeters of the headlights and serving as the daytime running lights and parking lights.
Safety
The 2012 Beetle features both active and passive safety. It includes Volkswagen's advanced Intelligent Crash Response System, which initiates automatic safety protection in some types of collisions — the electrical supply to the fuel pump is shut off, the doors unlock and the hazard lights switch on. Electronic Stability Control (ESC) is standard, as are driver and front passenger airbags and Side Curtain Protection® airbags in front and rear.
The 21st Century Beetle is also covered under the no-charge Carefree Maintenance Program. All scheduled maintenance is covered for the length of the New Vehicle Warranty – three years or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first. Additionally, all current Volkswagen vehicles use synthetic oil, which, when combined with state-of-the-art German engineering, eliminates the need for a 5,000 mile oil change, and allows owners to go farther between scheduled oil changes.
More than 60 years later, in 1998, the "New Beetle" rekindled the spirit and imagination of the original to a new generation of Volkswagen owners. The second generation version sparked another round of uplifting and joyous enthusiasm known as Beetle Mania.

HIGH MPG VEHICLES: DEBUNKING THE FIVE BIG MYTHS
NEW YORK CITY///April 14, 2011///Auto fuel efficiency is going up and high-MPG auto sales are surging today, but a handful of persistent myths continue to cloud the understanding of some policymakers and members of the general public, according to Go60MPG, a joint effort of Environment America, the National Wildlife Federation, the Natural Resources Defense Council, the Safe Climate Campaign, the Sierra Club, and the Union of Concerned Scientists.
Ahead of the New York International Auto Show being held April 22-May 1 in New York City and the Electric Drive Transportation Association (EDTA) 2011 Conference being held April 19-21 in Washington, D.C., Go60MPG is releasing the following list of five myths and facts:
1. MYTH: Americans don't want high MPG cars … and aren't buying them.
FACT: High MPG car sales are rising sharply. The market has spoken – and it wants high MPG cars. March sales figures point to surging demand for hybrids and other fuel efficient cars. Michigan-based auto market expert Alan Baum's analysis shows sales of hybrids and clean diesels rose 46 percent from March 2010-March 2011, almost three times as fast as the overall market. The Baum data also show small cars and hybrids are the most in demands in the used car market, with the increase in the value of the Toyota Prius hybrids exceeding all other vehicles. (http://baum-assoc.com/Documents/commentary%20on%20vehicle%20sales%20data%20apr11.pdf)
With gasoline prices hovering at $4 gallon, the hybrid market could be reaching a tipping point. (http://switchboard.nrdc.org/blogs/rhwang/2011_year_of_the_hybrid_last_w.html) As USA Today reported in an article last week titled "Prius sales top 1M as pump prices spur interest in hybrids": "The first quarter this year, about 275,000 hybrids of all kinds were sold in the U.S., and about 141,000 of those were Priuses, says Kevin Riddell, auto analyst at consultant J.D. Power and Associates. His data show that hybrids — and a handful of pure electric cars — made up 2.4 percent of new vehicle sales last year, and he forecasts they'll make up 4.5 percent in 2012, a fast pace driven by new models from Toyota and others in the interim. That's a strong showing, considering hybrids are priced higher than similar gasoline cars." (http://www.usatoday.com/money/autos/2011-04-06-prius-tops-one-million-in-sales.htm)
2. MYTH: Detroit can't make money selling high MPG cars.
FACT: High MPG standards can be profitable for Detroit … and also help boost U.S. MPG technology innovation. A March 2011 Citi report released by Ceres and the Investor Network on Climate Risk shows that stronger fuel efficiency and global warming pollution standards will boost variable profits and sales in 2020 for the auto industry worldwide, with the Detroit 3 seeing the biggest financial benefits. The Detroit 3's variable profit gains would garner more than half of all increased profits. Walter McManus, an economist at the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) and Director of the Automotive Analysis Group, said: "Our research indicates that increasing industry average fuel economy to 42 miles per gallon by 2020 could raise industry variable profit by $9.1 billion, or 8 percent. Most of the added profit, $5.1 billon, could go to the Detroit 3." (http://www.ceres.org/Page.aspx?pid=1355)
3. MYTH: Automakers oppose high MPG cars and will impede any progress along those lines.
FACT: Automakers understand that fuel efficiency is now driving auto consumer purchases. When asked to rate the importance of product attributes to consumer purchase decisions over the next five years, auto executives cite "fuel efficiency" the most frequently (91 percent) in the 2011 annual global automotive survey conducted by KPMG LLP survey, followed by safety innovation (82 percent), vehicle styling (77 percent), and environmental friendliness (75 percent). For the 12th annual survey, KPMG interviewed 200 global executives, representing vehicle manufacturers and suppliers, from October through November 2010. (http://www.kpmg.com/KZ/en/IssuesAndInsights/ArticlesAndPublications/Press-Releases/Pages/KPMG-International-presented-the-results-of-12th-annual-auto-survey.aspx)
Automakers not only have made changes, but now admit that higher MPG standards is helping their competiveness in a world of high gasoline prices, according to Automotive News: "Many automakers believe that the work they've done since the last big price surge, and in anticipation of higher government fuel efficiency standards, leaves them better prepared this time, with stables of more competitive small cars and crossovers." (http://www.autonews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20110314/RETAIL07/303149972/1135.)
4. MYTH: High MPG/low pollution car technology isn't ready for prime time.
FACT: High-MPG technology is already here – like turbochargers, direct injection, dual-clutch transmissions, lighter materials, and stop-start technology – and it is getting better every day. Dan Meszler of Meszler Engineering Services, who has analyzed transportation energy and air quality issues since 1982, said: ‘"… technology exists to address a number of continuing inefficiencies associated with internal combustion engines. Between now and 2020 much of this technology is expected to mature, so that a 2020 CAFE requirement of 42 miles per gallon should produce consumer savings starting at gas prices of $2.00 per gallon. Since current and expected future gasoline prices far exceed that price, these technologies driven fuel savings are extremely cost effective and indicate that a 42 mile per gallon CAFE program will not only reduce petroleum imports, but save consumers money." Suppliers of these technologies - from turbochargers to direct injection, dual-clutch transmissi ons and more - will benefit even further under a new fuel economy standard requiring improvements of 6 percent a year between 2017and 2025. (http://www.ceres.org/Page.aspx?pid=1355)
Steven Plotkin, a researcher at Argonne National Laboratory, said many of the technologies for lowering CO2 emissions are already available from the same manufacturers that had once declared them to be impossible. Turbocharged four-cylinder engines, for example, are able to replace six-cylinder power plants; with no decline in performance and with reduced emissions. Lithium ion cathode technology licensed from Argonne is being used to improve the performance and increase the safety of the batteries being manufactured by South Korea's LG Chem for the Chevrolet Volt. (http://blogs.physicstoday.org/politics/2011/01/cutting-co2-transportation-emi.html).
Turbochargers are rapidly emerging as the choice for automakers that need moderately priced, off-the-shelf technology to meet corporate average fuel economy targets. By 2015, as many as 25 percent of all light vehicles sold in the United States will be turbocharged, up from 8 percent this year, predicts J.D. Power and Associates. Turbochargers "will be used by nearly all major carmakers," says Mike Omotoso, J.D. Power's senior manager of global power trains. "The technology has been around for a long time, and it's relatively cheap compared with hybrids" and electric vehicles. (http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13746_7-20021364-48.html)
5. MYTH: High MPG car prices are too expensive for most consumers.
FACT: Higher MPG standards and related incentives will make fuel-efficient cars even more affordable. New standards being considered by the Obama Administration would decrease fuel consumption for new vehicles up to 6 percent per year from 2017 through 2025, which would boost average fuel efficiency up to about 60 MPG (about 48 MPG on road). This would be at a cost of about $3200 per vehicle, which would be paid for in about four years through fuel savings. These clean car standards would save vehicle owners $7,500 over the life of the vehicle at a gas price of $3.50 per gallon, even after paying for the additional cost of the cleaner vehicle. That's the equivalent of a gasoline price cut of more than a $1 per gallon compared to a vehicle with today's fuel efficiency. (http://www.ucsusa.org/assets/documents/clean_vehicles/protection-against-rising-gas-prices-ucs-1.pdf)
Automakers have claimed costs would be higher: "Automakers argue those estimates are "unrealistic" and point to a Center for Automotive Research analysis that says hiking fuel efficiency to 60.1 mpg could boost vehicle prices 22 percent, cut sales 25 percent and trim up to 220,000 auto sector jobs."( http://detnews.com/article/20110412/AUTO01/104120407/1148/rss25) Unfortunately for the automakers, that Michigan-based CAR report has already been discredited by the International Center for Clean Technologies (ICCT). In a stinging critique, the ICCT points out numerous flaws in the study which the consultants have yet to respond to. (http://www.theicct.org/2011/03/car-2025-forecast-analysis/) History also shows that automakers typically exaggerate the cost of new clean car technology, so the recent CAR claims come as no surprise to long-time observers of the auto industry. (http://switchboard.nrdc.org/blogs/rhwang/as_i_blogged_about_earlier.html)
BACKGROUND
The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have been directed by President Obama to establish joint fuel efficiency and pollution standards for new cars and trucks. Specifically, the agencies will establish new Corporate Average Fuel Economy and global warming pollution standards, respectively, for light-duty vehicles—a category that includes cars, SUVs, minivans, and most pickup trucks—for model years 2017 to 2025. In order to maximize the benefits of better fuel efficiency, the Obama administration is being encouraged to set standards that cut America's oil dependence by at least 49 billion gallons of fuel and at least 535 million metric tons of heat trapping carbon pollution in the year 2030, or the equivalent of 60 MPG by model year 2025.
Ahead of the New York International Auto Show being held April 22-May 1 in New York City and the Electric Drive Transportation Association (EDTA) 2011 Conference being held April 19-21 in Washington, D.C., Go60MPG is releasing the following list of five myths and facts:

Upbeat Truck Dealers Meet in Phoenix for Annual Convention and Expo
PHOENIX (April 14, 2011) – From reviewing the basics of business to the launch of a new program for the next generation of truck dealers, attendees of the American Truck Dealers (ATD) annual conclave this weekend will walk away with a wealth of ideas to rebuild their businesses, says Kyle Treadway, ATD chairman.
"The economic recovery appears to have kicked into gear, but we're mindful that it's a fragile one," said Treadway, who will meet with dealers at the ATD Convention and Expo, held this year in Phoenix April 15-18. "Threats of spiraling fuel prices, inflationary pressures and the federal budget crisis could derail this locomotive as it begins to build some steam."
Keynote speakers during the four-day conference at the Phoenix Convention Center include Treadway; Bill Graves, president of the American Trucking Associations; and Donald Broughton, senior research analyst and managing director of Avondale Partners LLC. Political analyst Charlie Cook will headline the first-ever general session covering legislative and regulatory affairs.
"Dealers need to remain vigilant with their cash management, inventory control and personnel management, and they cannot do it alone," said Treadway, president of Kenworth Sales Company in West Valley City, Utah.
Treadway says the ATD convention provides dealers and their managers with critical support to help improve their business operations, formalize an action plan and find out about best practices from their peers.
Thirteen workshop sessions—covering federal regulatory issues, marketing, social media and other business issues—will be offered to help dealerships better prepare for the economic rebound.
"We're also encouraging dealers who attend the convention to participate in and actively influence the political process which has rocked our world this past decade," Treadway said. "It's time to be bullish on our economy and that means asserting ourselves into the regulatory and legislative process."
For more information, visit www.ATDconventionandexpo.org.
About ATD: The American Truck Dealers (ATD) division of the National Automobile Dealers Association, established in 1970, represents nearly 2,000 medium- and heavy-duty truck dealers with about 3,000 franchises, both domestic and international. For more information, visit www.ATD.org.

DEMAND FOR DIESEL VEHICLE LEASES RISES ON LEASETRADER.COM
MIAMI – (April 12, 2011) – With gas prices approaching $4 a gallon in many states, drivers are inquiring about fuel-efficient options that go beyond hybrid vehicles and public transportation. More so than in 2008, drivers are ready to get behind the wheel of diesel vehicles, which in some cases are more costly but also offer more miles per gallon. Popular car leasing website LeaseTrader.com says search demand and lease takeovers are up for several diesel models compared with activity from 2008.
The Mercedes E350 Bluetec has the highest demand among diesel vehicles on LeaseTrader.com, with search demand up 6.4 percent compared with January. Search demand has also increased for diesel vehicle models from BMW, Audi and Volkswagen since January. For domestic vehicles, Chevy and Ford diesel truck searches have increased in the same time period.
Brand/Model % Search Increase since Jan. 2011
Mercedes E350 Bluetec +6.4%
Mercedes ML350 Bluetec +4.7%
Mercedes GL350 Bluetec +4.2%
BMW X5 Diesel +5.8%
BMW 335d +5.4%
Audi A3 TDI +6.3%
Audi Q7 TDI +5.2%
Volkswagen Jetta TDI +6.1%
Chevy Silverado Diesel +2.8%
Ford Super Duty Diesel +2.5%
"The diesel cars of today are clearly not your father's diesel," said Sergio Stiberman, CEO and founder of LeaseTrader.com. "More people today are searching for diesels because of the improved mileage they can get and they're offered in vehicle styles they know and love. What's more, diesel residuals are very strong right now which means deals are getting better."
Diesel engine technology, popular in Europe and gaining ground in the U.S., has cleaned up its act over the years and is a cleaner-burning fuel today compared to vehicles in 1980s. What's more, diesel engines are known for getting extra mileage out of every gallon of fuel compared with gasoline engines, making it a viable alternative despite its higher per-gallon cost. According to The Diesel Driver, a website offering data and analysis of diesel fuel insight, sales of diesel automobiles doubled in 2010.

Airgas Receives CGA Fleet Safety Awards for Second Consecutive Year
RADNOR, PA - April 11, 2011 - Airgas, Inc. (NYSE: ARG) today announced that it received two fleet safety awards from the Compressed Gas Association (CGA), the U.S. industrial and medical gas industry's standard-setting organization for the promotion of safety standards and safe practices. It was the second straight year Airgas has been awarded the two CGA Fleet Safety Awards, one for Bulk Gas Transportation in recognition of the best safety record among bulk gas fleets with more than 20 million miles driven during 2010, and one for Cylinder Gas Transportation in recognition of the best safety record among cylinder gas fleets with more than three million miles driven during 2010.
The CGA calculates its Fleet Safety awards on a CGA member's total vehicle accident frequency rate per million miles driven during the year. Two awards honor bulk gas fleets, including one for fleets with more than 20 million miles driven and one for fleets with less than 20 million miles driven. Two awards also honor cylinder gas fleets, with one for more than three million miles driven and one for less than three million miles driven.
Airgas is a three-time winner of the CGA Bulk Gas Transportation award and a four-time winner of the CGA Cylinder Gas Transportation award. Airgas has one of the largest bulk gas fleets and the largest cylinder gas fleet among CGA members.
"Safety is paramount with all of us at Airgas and we are honored for being recognized by the CGA for having the best safety record among large fleets, both bulk and cylinder gas," said Airgas Chief Executive Officer Peter McCausland. "In a year that presented us with several distractions, our drivers proved their mettle yet again by maintaining focus on safely meeting the needs of Airgas customers.

A. Duie Pyle Steps Up Corporate Sustainability, Solar Energy Output Runs Warehouse at Full Capacity
WEST CHESTER, PA, April 12, 2011 - A. Duie Pyle, a leading Northeast transportation and logistics provider, is making one giant step forward in minimizing its impact on the environment as the company's largest warehousefacility churns out solar energy at full capacity.
Pyle's most recent commitment to environmental sustainability, a megawatt solar installation, is already producing the desired results for the company's 570,000 square foot warehousing and distribution facility. Now running at full capacity, the solar energy produced is supplying 100% of the electricity needs for the building. The installation, managed by MainLine Solar of West Chester, PA, involved a roof mount of 4,464 flat panel modules which covers approximately 50 percent of the facility's rooftop.
This latest large-scale solar installation is not the only initiative in place at Pyle to advance its environmental sustainability long-term. Environmental measures are in motion throughout the company, including fuel-efficient equipment and engine idling controls, recycling and waste reduction of motor oil and tires, energy efficient lighting, and organizational changes that range from the use of sustainable cleaning products to printing and copying practices that default to two-sided printing.
The company's Information Technology department is also playing a critical role and has more than a dozen systems integration, data management, and software solutions in development that are changing the way the company improves fuel efficiency, an equally noteworthy contributor to protecting the planet.
"Technology is a centralizing component of business and environmental performance," said Michael Crowley, vice president and chief information officer for A. Duie Pyle. "By focusing on incremental process improvements, technology makes it possible to create business efficiencies that customize our business to the needs of our customers every single day."
Crowley's team developed over 500 enhancements in 2010 alone and he has already begun a full-scale implementation of sophisticated route planning optimization technology, which will improve terminal operations efficiencies that directly impact fuel usage. Pyle's Information Technology Council engaged in a nine-month planning effort which involved extensive research and market scan, complex RFP review ,and structured product demonstrations to find the right solution. With the first phase of implementation scheduled for later this year, the company expects to achieve pick-up and delivery efficiencies resulting in an annual 5-6% reduction in miles, maintenance costs, and fuel consumption.
By choosing more modern technology with greater efficiency, Crowley's efforts to reduce the company's environmental footprint is already scoring results. To date, printer/copier/fax modernization efforts have reduced the number of individual devices from 173 to 43 MFPs (multi-function printers). With over 250 hardware and software replacements complete, Pyle employees have experienced a ten-year jump in technology that is affording the company substantial reductions in power usage. A server virtualization/consolidation project will also contribute to power savings through a reduction of at least 50% of Pyle's physical servers and attendant space. Pyle's IT department is also helping to create a paperless environment for shippers, having worked with nearly 200 customers to convert them to paperless EDI transactions last year.
"Our plan for sustainability is to achieve social, environmental and economic performance - that's a triple bottom line," said Peter Latta, owner and chairman of A. Duie Pyle. "Our sizable investment in technology and solar energy is heading in that direction."

Forsyth County, N.C. Automates Car Sharing with FleetCommander Technology, Makes Transition in 100 Days
CHANTILLY, VA, April 5, 2011 - Hit hard by the national economic downturn and rapidly increasing gas prices, Forsyth County, N.C. significantly slashed the cost of managing its vehicles by implementing FleetCommander, a web browser-based fleet and motor pool management application. FleetCommander technology enabled Forsyth County to transition from cumbersome legacy systems, spreadsheets, and log books to a fully automated system that resulted in cost savings that included cutting 30 vehicles. The transition was made in roughly 100 days, according to FleetCommander creator Agile Access Control, Inc. (Agile), who made the announcement today.
Forsyth County rolled out FleetCommander to four locations that manage 127 of its total 620 vehicles. Three locations are now equipped with touch-screen, self-service kiosks, and secure key boxes that distribute and collect keys. The fourth location manages the motor pool using the web-based software's graphical dispatching tools. The new technology has enabled county executives to analyze day-to-day fleet utilization statistics and recognize significant cost-cutting measures. With FleetCommander technology, Forsyth County is now able to:
• Replace labor-intensive, paper-based vehicle request processes with online reservation forms.
• Automatically communicate and enforce the county's fleet policies using the online request capabilities.
• Provide 24 x 7 x 365 access to vehicles at motor pool locations using self-service kiosks and secure automated key systems.
• Provide real-time, automatically-updating fleet dashboards to alert staff of ways to reallocate vehicles or reduce fleet size.
According to county officials, FleetCommander metrics provided information allowing them to make immediate cost-cutting changes. "By utilizing the FleetCommander software, we were able to right size the fleet while ensuring that transportation is available to employees when needed. The county fleet was immediately reduced by 30 vehicles, and this number may increase as usage data is collected," says Forsyth County General Services Department Business Manager Sara Warmuth. In addition, Warmuth says that personal mileage reimbursement is expected to decrease because of more efficient vehicle sharing, which eliminates the need for employees to use their personal vehicles for county business. The county fleet currently serves 2,000 employees.
Matthew Wade, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Agile, says despite having a tough budget situation, Forsyth County employees have the right tools and the right attitude. "I'm excited about the end-user acceptance we're already getting from county employees. It appears they are 'all-in' when it comes to focusing on cost savings. When we envisioned developing a 100% automated fleet and motor pool technology, we wanted it to enable our customers to achieve savings and efficiency just like what Forsyth County is now realizing. It's a great fit."
In addition to the motor pool capabilities, Forsyth County fleet managers are using FleetCommander for asset management, driver management, policy enforcement, reporting, communication with fleet drivers, and more.

Cedarville University Boosts Car Sharing Effort with Web-Based Motor Pool Management Technology
CHANTILLY, VA, April 7, 2011 - Jolted by the national economic downturn, Cedarville University in Cedarville, Ohio, recently implemented a car sharing initiative to streamline the university's motor pool and significantly reduce the workload on its shrinking staff. The announcement was made today by Agile Access Control, Inc. (Agile), creator of FleetCommander, the 100% web-browser based fleet and motor pool management application now in place at Cedarville.
According to university officials, Cedarville averages more than 260 vehicle requests per week from 250 users of their 26-vehicle fleet. With recent reductions in staff, the university sought a car sharing solution that would meet the needs of its fleet users, maximize the use of their vehicles, and ease the administrative burden on its fleet managers. According to Cedarville, a key consideration in their selection of FleetCommander was the fact that it could be implemented smoothly so that the transition could be easy for university fleet staff.
Vicky Hines, Cedarville's fleet coordinator, said, "It took us no time at all to get started, and we saw immediate advantages. With FleetCommander, we now use one system instead of three, and billing data is automatically generated when vehicles return. I am so thankful we are using FleetCommander now."
Agile worked closely with Cedarville's fleet staff to facilitate the transition to FleetCommander by:
• Importing user, department, and asset data from legacy systems
• Developing a custom billing algorithm to automate accounting processes
• Quickly addressing customer support questions
• Providing hands-on FleetCommander application training for staff
• Offering assistance and advice on configuring FleetCommander to meet their unique needs
"The FleetCommander staff has been so patient and helpful throughout the transition," said John Wambold, director of community ministries at Cedarville University. "We are excited to be a part of the FleetCommander community. We see the benefits every day."

ALTe POWERTRAIN TECHNOLOGIES AND MANHEIM ANNOUNCE PARTNERSHIP TO INSTALL ALTe POWERTRAINS IN FLEET VEHICLES
AUBURN HILLS, MI – April 7, 2011 – ALTe Powertrain Technologies, the Michigan-based developer of a Range Extended Electric Powertain, is pleased to announce an agreement with Manheim, the automotive industry's leader in remarketing services, regarding the installation of ALTe powertrains in fleet vehicles. With this partnership, ALTe's fleet customers will be able to take their vehicle to a Manheim operating location and Manheim will retrofit their light trucks and vans with an ALTe series plug-in electric hybrid powertrain. The fleet customer will then reinsert the vehicle back into its fleet and realize fuel economy improvements of up to 200 percent.
According to ALTe CEO John Thomas, "ALTe is excited to have the opportunity to work with Manheim, which is recognized as the world's leading remarketing company. Their reputation for quality and their familiarity with the fleet industry is a perfect fit for our business model. We look forward to their participation in the electrification of the automotive industry as we progress toward next year's product launch for ALTe."
"We were extremely impressed with the ALTe technology, management team, and business model and are looking forward to expanding the broad range of services that we presently offer to our fleet and automotive customers," said Fredrick Standfield, Manheim's Vice President of Frontline Operations. "This partnership will allow us to utilize available capacity in our auction facilities and complements our strategy to grow our revenue base within the clean technology space."
The major components of the ALTe powertrain will include a 20kWh lithium ion battery pack, a four-cylinder engine, electric drive motors, a generator, a proprietary hybrid controller unit and HVAC modules. The powertrain is projected to provide an initial 30 miles of driving in an all-electric mode, powered directly from the lithium ion battery pack. The vehicle can then drive an estimated additional 275 miles in a charge-sustained mode before the vehicle would need to be either plugged in or refueled. The battery pack can be charged within an 8-hour timeframe from a 110-volt outlet or in about 4 hours from a 220-volt outlet. Fuel economy is projected to increase by up to 200 percent with no loss in cargo capacity, increased torque, and comparable horsepower and towing capability when compared with the old V8 engine.
The ALTe powertrain is targeted to the light truck market (full size pickups and vans) with a focus on commercial, government and utility fleets. Job #1 for ALTe is projected for spring 2012 with the company beginning to accept purchase orders at the end of 2011.

Gold Eagle Co. Launches New Product: STA-BIL® Ethanol Treatment and Performance Improver
CHICAGO –The makers of STA-BIL®, America's #1 selling gas stabilizer, introduce STA-BIL® Ethanol Treatment and Performance Improver, designed specifically for gasoline vehicles and small engines to protect against the effects of Ethanol-blended fuels.
Ethanol in fuel can cause corrosion by attracting moisture from the air. Ethanol is also a solvent, which can loosen debris and deposits that have built up in a fuel tank over time, resulting in clogged fuel systems. This can lead to hard starting, rough running and even stalling of equipment.
STA-BIL® Ethanol Treatment and Performance Improver will aid in protecting equipment in a number of ways by:
• Preventing corrosion
• Helping to remove water from fuel
• Cleaning fuel injectors, carburetors and intake valves to keep engines running smoothly for optimal performance.
STA-BIL® Ethanol Treatment and Performance Improver is designed to be used with every fill up, for the ultimate protection against Ethanol blended fuels.
STA-BIL® Ethanol Treatment and Performance Improver will be sold at top automotive, mass and hardware retailers, and available in two different sizes a 10 oz. bottle (treating up to 25 gallons) for car and truck owners, (suggested retail: $8.99) , as well as a 4 oz. smaller bottle (treating up to 10 gallons) for small gasoline engine equipment such as lawnmowers, trimmers, snow blowers, snowmobiles, motorcycles, ATV's, scooters , etc. (suggested retail: $4.99).
The STA-BIL® brand of products are over 40 years old, and is the best selling fuel stabilizer on the market today. Many competitors have tried to conquer this market, but have made little headway due to the strong brand recognition and trust of the STA-BIL® brand.
STA-BIL® Ethanol Treatment is made by Gold Eagle® Co., manufacturer of leading brands including HEET® Gas-Line Antifreeze, NO-LEAK® Treatments, 104+® Octane Boost, and DieselPower!® Diesel Additives. APACHE BUILDS CNG STATION FOR HOUSTON'S BUSH INTERCONTINENTAL AIRPORT
HOUSTON (April 1, 2011) – Apache Corporation announced today that the company will build a compressed natural gas (CNG) refueling station for the ecopark fleet of buses that carry passengers to and from the city's economy parking lots at Houston' Bush Intercontinental Airport.
The station is expected to be ready for service in 60-90 days.
"At Apache, we are convinced that clean-burning natural gas must be a bigger part of the solution to America's ever increasing reliance on imported crude oil, while reducing pollution caused by other, more carbon-intensive fuels used in transportation and power generation," said G. Steven Farris, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer at Apache.
Mr. Farris noted that the new CNG station is a win-win solution. It provides for a better environment in Houston as natural gas burns cleaner than diesel or gasoline. It's an abundant, domestic fuel source – with estimates of a 100-year supply. Developing domestic supplies also provides for local jobs that produce a more economic fuel. Filling up a tank with CNG is a fraction of the cost compared with gasoline or diesel.
"CNG is a better way to move people and goods than our traditional petroleum fuels. In fact, at Apache we're doubling down on our use of CNG. This year we're going to double the size of our CNG-powered vehicle fleet and double the number of CNG stations we operate. To encourage further CNG use, we're also implementing an incentive program to encourage our employees to acquire CNG vehicles," he said.
At year-end 2010, Apache had seven CNG stations and 111 CNG-fueled vehicles among its fleet in Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana. Apache also is planning to allow public access to its CNG stations at four facilities, which will be located in Houston, Lafayette, Midland and Tulsa.
About Apache
Apache Corporation (NYSE, Nasdaq: APA) is an oil and gas exploration and production company with operations in the United States, Canada, Egypt, the United Kingdom North Sea, Australia and Argentina. Apache common stock is listed on the New York Stock Exchange and quoted on the NASDAQ National Market under the symbol APA.
