Old Dominion Wins InformationWeek 500’s Logistics and Transportation Award

THOMASVILLE, N.C. (Sept. 15, 2010) – Old Dominion Freight Line Inc. has been named to the 2010 InformationWeek 500 – a list of the top technology innovators in the United States. The company ranked No. 15 on the magazine’s overall list and topped the logistics and transportation category.

“Information technology is critical to our ability to help the world keep promises, and without the right technology in place, we could not be as efficient of a company as we are,” said Ken Erdner, Old Dominion’s vice president of information system and technology. “We are always working to make the best use of technology, and we are honored to not only make this year’s InformationWeek 500 list, but lead the list of logistics and transportation companies.”

As part of its shift in recent years to increase the use of technology for everyday business, Old Dominion has overhauled its claims management system – moving to a computerized system for handling claims and away from a traditional, paper-based method of filing and tracking.

Currently, more than 99 percent of the company’s claims are either handled during the initial call from a customer or they are processed automatically from that first call. Since the claims system can be linked to the company’s SAP Business Intelligence and Data Warehouse platform, Old Dominion employees can now easily review a customer’s history and remedy any problems that might arise before they happen.

“For 22 years, the InformationWeek 500 has honored the most innovative users of business technology,” said InformationWeek Editor In Chief Rob Preston. “As we start to emerge from the worst recession in decades, the IT focus is now on driving growth – new sources of revenue, new relationships with customers, even new business models. This year’s ranking placed special emphasis on those companies and business technology executives leading that charge.”

In addition to its annual 500 listing, InformationWeek tracks the technology, strategies, investments and administrative practices of America’s best-known companies.

Top winners have included: CME Group, National Semiconductor, Kimberly-Clark, Hilton Hotels and Unum. The InformationWeek 500 rankings are unique among corporate rankings as it spotlights the power of innovation in information technology, rather than simply identifying the biggest IT spenders.
