EPA Recognizes Byrne Transportation Services As SmartWay® Transport Partner

WARRENVILLE, IL, AUGUST 22, 2011  –  The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), engaged in the reduction of pollution and energy waste during transport of goods, has recognized Byrne Transportation Services, LLC as a SmartWay® Transport Partner.
SmartWay® Transport is a public/private collaboration between the EPA and the freight transportation industry.  The SmartWay® Transport Partnership provides a framework to assess the environmental and energy efficiency of the nation’s transportation supply chain. Partners rely upon SmartWay® tools and approaches to track and reduce emissions and fuel use from goods movement.
Based on relationships with its carriers who are also members of the  SmartWay® Transport Partnership, Byrne Transportation Services will contribute to the Partnership’s savings of 1.5 billion gallons of fuel, $3.6 billion in fuel costs, 14.7 MMT of carbon dioxide, 215,000 tons of oxides of nitrogen and 8,000 tons of particulate matter. Carbon dioxide is the most common greenhouse gas, and nitrogen oxide is an air pollutant that contributes to smog. By SmartWay® Transport Partnership, Byrne Transportation Services demonstrates its strong environmental leadership and corporate responsibility.
“Many of our carriers are also part of the SmartWay® Transport Partnership, and we share with them a deep and abiding interest in ensuring that the transportation of goods is accomplished in the most cost-effective manner and with minimal impact on the environment,” says John Byrne, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Byrne Transportation Services, LLC. “This partnership ensures that this interest will continue to be in the forefront of all our company’s operations.”
Developed jointly in early 2003 by EPA and Charter Partners represented by industry stakeholders, environmental groups, American Trucking Associations and Business for Social Responsibility, the program launched in 2004. The Partnership currently has more than 3,000 partners.
