Oklahoma Congressman supports
long-term legislation to extend
current and previous federal alternative fuel credits for propane autogas |
“I firmly believe that we must develop alternatives to traditional transportation fuels if we hope to promote greater energy independence in the U.S. By developing propane autogas-fueled vehicles, we could achieve this goal while also spurring manufacturing growth and job creation,” said Congressman Dan Boren, a member of the House Natural Resources Committee. Seeded in the Propane GAS Act are extensions for provisions previously outlined in the 2005 Energy and 2005 Highway Bills. These provisions include significant tax incentives for propane autogas, including a 50-cent per gallon credit for propane sold for use in motor vehicles; a tax credit to consumers who purchase vehicles fueled by propane autogas; and a tax credit amounting to 30 percent of the cost of installing a fueling facility, not to exceed $30,000 per station. The legislation was introduced in the United States House May 27, following President Obama’s Federal Fleet Memorandum ordering all newly leased or purchased light-duty agency vehicles be alternative-fuel-powered by December 31, 2015. “Congressman Boren is signing on for more job creation in America as he pledges his support to the Propane GAS Act,” said Joe Thompson, president of ROUSH CleanTech. “We estimate that for every 100 propane autogas vehicles put on the road, there is one new job created either directly at ROUSH or within our supply chain. ROUSH CleanTech vehicles are as American as apple pie — they are not only made in America, they run on American-made fuel. “Knowing that the congressman is not seeking reelection, this may be on of his most important acts and lasting legacies before leaving Congress next year.” About 90 percent of U.S. propane supplies are produced domestically, which helps reduce dependence on foreign oil. Recognizing the broad impact that transportation has on America’s carbon footprint, ROUSH CleanTech has developed a range of fleet vehicles that emit up to 24 percent less carbon dioxide, about 20 percent less nitrogen oxide, and 60 percent less carbon monoxide than gasoline-powered vehicles. ROUSH CleanTech’s propane autogas vehicles meet stringent environmental requirements while maintaining the same performance standards as gasoline. Companies such as Frito-Lay, ThyssenKrupp Elevator, CenturyLink, SuperShuttle, Ford Motor Company, Time Warner Cable, Ferrellgas, and Heritage Propane have adopted ROUSH CleanTech propane autogas vehicles in their fleets, and have found that making the switch makes economic sense, with a reduction in fuel and maintenance costs across the board. “ROUSH CleanTech propane autogas vehicles have less maintenance costs and longer engine life because propane burns cleaner than gasoline or diesel, resulting in fewer engine deposits. On average propane autogas costs 30 to 40 percent less than conventional fuels,” said Thompson. “If passed, the Propane GAS Act will provide a much welcomed relief to initial and ongoing change of fuel costs that can be extremely taxing for fleet managers.” About ROUSH CleanTech: Based in Michigan, ROUSH CleanTech offers dedicated liquid propane autogas fuel systems for a variety of light- and medium- duty Ford vehicles, including the F-150, F-250, F-350 pickup truck series; the F-450 and F-550 chassis cab truck series; the E-150, E-250, and E-350 van and wagon series; and the E-350 and E-450 cutaway van series.
