THOMASVILLE, North Carolina (July 19, 2011) – Inbound Logistics has named
Old Dominion Freight Line Inc. to its annual 75 Green Supply Chain Partners
(G75) list.
To compile the list, the magazine’s
editors chose 75 companies in several categories of logistics service providers
– including 3PLs, truckers, ports and forklifts – they determined are truly
“walking the walk” when it comes to commitment to supply chain sustainability.
The publication featured the G75 list in its June issue.
“We take our commitment to the
environment seriously, and we are honored to be recognized as part of this
prestigious list,” said David Congdon, Old Dominion’s president and CEO.
“However, our work in sustainability is not finished. As a company, we’ve made
a promise to ourselves and to our customers that we will continue to work to
find solutions that are not only right for our business, but also the
environment.”
In recent years, Old Dominion has
implemented a number of green measures for its fleet of more than 5,500
tractors and in its 31 fleet shops and 213 service centers nationwide. These
measures include:
§ Use
of drive-through truck washers with custom-built oil-water separators
§ Installation
of idle shut down timers on tractors that turn off the engine after five
minutes of idling to reduce excess emissions
§ Deployment
of on-board driver monitoring systems and development of driver training
programs to improve driver efficiency
§ Implementation
of fuel saving controls on tractors, such as speed-regulating governors
§ Use
of 100 percent propane-powered forklifts at the company’s service centers to
meet or exceed regulatory air emission standards
§ Implementation
of state of the art virtualization technology within the company’s server
operations to significantly decrease energy use associated with IT functions
§ Elimination
of the use of CFC refrigerants in all HVAC systems
The company is also upgrading the
lighting systems at its service centers and support facilities, a move that has
resulted in up to a 20-25 percent reduction in total energy use at those
facilities. Also, Old Dominion contracts with licensed companies to pick up and
recycle waste oil, filters and antifreeze.
In addition, Old Dominion is a
partner with the Environmental Protection Agency’s SmartWay program. SmartWay
is a collaboration between the EPA and the freight industry designed to improve
energy efficiency and energy security while reducing greenhouse gas and air
pollutant emissions.
